Maui Wowie Part 1: Getting there through the storm
Tim's parents decided in about March that they wanted to spend Christmas in Maui, away from the miserable Alaskan winter. Who can blame them? I was very fortunate that they included me in their plans.
If you didn't hear, the weather in Seattle in December was a mess:
This was like 3 blocks from my house
KOMO 4 News

We had a few snow days at work when most people didn't bother driving to work, I went to work because I'm a trooper like that, except for the one day when it was just bad, like I couldn't walk up a hill without crampons bad. Living in the busiest area of Seattle, just about everything was still open and accessible if it's not up a hill, so it was really a free day off. People were sledding down Denny Way, which is one of the busiest streets around here. Good times. This one dude was sledding on a "Road Closed" sign. Tim and I just hung out and watched horrible daytime TV. Did you know there are like 7 "Judge whatever People's Court" shows? Where 24 year old women, who look older than Tim's mom, get into bar brawls and decide to sue each other on television. I really wish I was kidding.

Getting to the airport was another story. Taxi companies were not answering calls, shuttle companies were not taking new reservations, all the airport lots were booked solid, the bus doesn't run at the time of night we needed to leave for the airport (2 am), the town car service canceled our reservation. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
We drove Tim's Chevy Blazer over the icy roads that were deeply pitted to the point where it's very much like off-roading, and that's just to get to the freeway. Freeway was great. Apparently that's all they plow with Seattle's 5 plows. We had a sleep-n-fly deal at an airport hotel. $150/night comes with 7 days of parking, so it ended up being a pretty good deal. Highly recommend for future reference. We got a decent night's sleep and didn't have to wake up quite so early.
As soon as we got to the airport it started snowing really hard, but not enough to stop us from going to MAUI.
